  4.        Since LOD has been growing larger and larger, I have resorted to a
  5. new distribution format. LOD itself is now comprised of a total of
  6. FOUR distribution archives:
  7.  
  8.        LOD360A.ARJ  -  Sysop and User documentation     [REQUIRED]
  9.  
  10.        LOD360B.ARJ  -  Main LOD program and data        [REQUIRED]
  11.  
  12.        LOD360C.ARJ  -  EGA version                      [OPTIONAL]
  13.  
  14.        LOD360D.ARJ  -  EGA additional graphics library  [OPTIONAL]
  15.  
  16.        LOD360E.ARJ  -  Sysop customization package      [OPTIONAL]
  17.  
  18.        LOD360F.ARJ  -  Sound/music support              [OPTIONAL]
  19.  
  20.        Only the first TWO of these archives are required for operation of
  21. LOD. This is LOD in it's most basic setup.
  22.  
  23.        The second two archives are used for the EGA version of Land
  24. Of Devastation. They include the EGA-specific .EXE file, picture data,
  25. etc.
  26.  
  27.        The fifth archive contains editors and utilities for sysops who
  28. like to take an active role in controlling their games.

  30. In more detail....

  33.        LOD360A.ARJ [REQUIRED]
  34.  
  35.        This file contains LOD's installation instructions, sysop
  36. documentation, and user documentation. I seperated these out so people
  37. may D/L just the doc files for LOD so they can get a sort of "preview"
  38. of the game before downloading the rest of the package.

  41.        LOD360B.ARJ [REQUIRED]
  42.  
  43.        In here is the "guts" of the game. The text version (i.e. non-EGA)
  44. .exe file, all of the ansi images, all of the data files, etc. This is
  45. REQUIRED if you wish to install LOD.

  48.        LOD360C.ARJ [OPTIONAL]
  49.  
  50.        Here you'll find the EGA-Specific version of LOD. Included is the
  51. executable (GAMEEGA.EXE) and the primary graphics resource files. You'll
  52. need this if you wish to run the EGA version of LOD. (Note: You still
  53. need LOD360A and LOD360B)

  56.        LOD360D.ARJ [OPTIONAL]
  57.  
  58.        This is an optional additional graphics package to be used with
  59. the EGA version of LOD. It includes what we call the "bigpics". These are
  60. pictures that pop-up in LOD's map window from time to time - They show
  61. you using a laptop, fighting monsters, attacking bases, etc. This file is
  62. purely for cosmetic purposes and not required for game play. It does make
  63. stuff look much nicer though.

  66.        LOD360E.ARJ [OPTIONAL]

  68.        This is the sysop customization package. It includes all of the
  69. editors, utilities, and other tools needed to customize and alter the
  70. play of your game. It is fully optional and not required in any
  71. way.

  74.        LOD360F.ARJ [OPTIONAL]
  75.  
  76.        This is the optional Land Of Devastation sound support package.
  77. This includes all of the background music that plays while LOD is running
  78. as well as the sound effects.
  79.        Sound is available while using a SOUND BLASTER or compatible
  80. card by using the /AUDIOSB option. PC Speaker sound is also available with
  81. the /AUDIOSPKR command line option, but the pc speaker sound quality isn't
  82. nearly as high as the sound blaster quality.
  83.        The sound system does use up a lot of additional memory (up to
  84. 200k). Please see the full LOD sysop docs contained in LOD360A.ARJ for
  85. more information.

  88. And what about GTERM?
  89. ---------------------

  91.        Gterm is the REMOTE TERMINAL for Land of Devastation. If your users
  92. run it, they can get full EGA graphics regardless of which version you
  93. run.
  94.        The EGA terminal really enhances play for the users and I recommend
  95. they grab it if they want to seriously play the game.

  97.        The filename is:

  99.        GTERM350.ARJ
  100.  
  101.        To hear sound while using GTERM, you must also download and unzip
  102. LOD360F.ARJ into the same directory as GTERM.

  105. So, to summarize:
  106. -----------------

  108.        If you want the TEXT-ONLY version of LOD, just download LOD360A.ARJ
  109. and LOD360B.ARJ. (Note: Even if you use this text-only version, you're users
  110. can still download GTERM and have EGA graphics on their side)
  111.  
  112.        If you want the EGA/TEXT version of LOD, download LOD360A.ARJ,
  113. LOD360B.ARJ, and LOD360C.ARJ. This will display EGA pictures on YOUR
  114. side. (Note: Users may play in text with a normal terminal or in
  115. EGA using Gterm)
  116.  
  117.        If you want LOD decked out with ALL of it's EGA graphics, grab
  118. LOD360A.ARJ, LOD360B.ARJ, LOD360C.ARJ, and LOD360D.ARJ. You'll have the
  119. full EGA graphical display, complete with all pictures and data.

  121.        If you like to play around with the game and alter some of the
  122. default parameters and such, then you might like LOD360E.ARJ - it includes
  123. all of the necessary tools for customizing your game.

  125.        If your USERS want to play in EGA, then they can download
  126. GTERM350.ARJ. It'll give them EGA capabilities on their end regardless of
  127. the version of LOD which you are running. If your users want to hear sound
  128. while using GTERM, then they'll need LOD360F.ARJ too.

  130.        If you have a Sound Blaster card, or you want to try the pc
  131. speaker sound (I highly recommend using a sound card!), then you might want
  132. to give LOD360F.ARJ a shot.
